WE COVER ALL LONDON BOROUGHS AND SURROUNDING AREAS
Immediate Professional Decontamination, 24/7
Sewage is a serious health hazard it cannot be safely handled without proper training.
Raw sewage is classified as Category 3 black water which is the highest contamination category because it contains a mixture of human waste, bacteria, viruses, and parasites capable of causing severe illness.
Tetanus, E. coli, Hepatitis A, Cryptosporidium, and Leptospirosis are all associated with sewage exposure. In a domestic or commercial property, a sewage incident cannot be safely managed with domestic cleaning products and household PPE.
Emergency Cleaning 247 responds to sewage spills, drain overflows, and wastewater contamination 24 hours a day across the UK. We extract, decontaminate, and restore affected areas fully, with documented disposal of all waste. Free assessment. Same-day attendance in most areas.
The UK Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) sets specific requirements for handling biological agents of this nature. Our procedures are built around these requirements.
What Causes Sewage Backup and Overflow
Understanding the cause helps prevent recurrence — but it does not change the immediate priority, which is safe cleanup.
Common causes we attend include:
• Blocked or collapsed sewer pipes beneath the property or on the shared drainage network
• Root ingress into drainage systems over time
• Grease, waste, and debris build-up in kitchen drain lines
• Combined sewer overload during heavy rainfall — particularly common in older UK cities
• Failed or blocked toilet branch connections
• Pump station failures in properties with lifted drainage
The underlying plumbing issue requires a drainage specialist or plumber. The contamination left behind requires us.
We focus entirely on the cleanup and decontamination side and we can work alongside your plumber or drainage contractor to coordinate access and timing.

Our Sewage Cleaning Process
Step 1 – Immediate response and safe assessment
We answer 24 hours a day. When you call, we give you a confirmed attendance time and guide you on what to do and what not to do before we arrive.
Step 2 – Containment
On arrival, we isolate the affected area to stop contamination spreading further. This includes checking for spread to adjacent rooms, beneath flooring, and behind fixtures.
Step 3 – Extraction
Industrial extraction equipment removes all standing sewage and contaminated liquid, including from below floor level where it has penetrated.
Step 4 – Material assessment and removal
We identify which materials can be safely decontaminated and which cannot. Carpet, underlay, certain flooring substrates, and plasterboard saturated with sewage typically need to be removed for health reasons. Everything removed is documented.
Step 5 – Full decontamination
Hospital-grade disinfectants are applied to every surface the sewage touched, with proper contact times observed. This is not a surface wipe it is systematic decontamination from the most affected areas outward.
Step 6 – Drying and odour treatment
Professional drying equipment runs until moisture levels return to safe baseline. Sewage odour is treated at source with enzymatic and ozone treatment — not masked with fragrance.
What to Do Right Now If Sewage Has Backed Up
Keep everyone especially children, elderly people, and pets away from the affected area.
Do not touch sewage or sewage-contaminated surfaces without appropriate protective equipment.
If water is near electrical sockets, switches, or fuse boxes, turn off the electricity supply to the affected area at the consumer unit if you can do so safely. If you cannot, leave it alone and tell us when you call.
Ventilate the area if you can by opening windows, but do not use fans that could spread airborne contamination to other parts of the property.
Questions People Asked And Answers
How dangerous is sewage exposure?
Genuinely dangerous. Pathogens in raw sewage can cause gastroenteritis, hepatitis A, leptospirosis (Weil’s disease), and other serious illnesses through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation. This is why COSHH training and appropriate PPE are required to handle it safely.
Can I clean a small sewage spill myself?
We strongly advise against it. Even a small sewage spill on a porous surface like grout, carpet, or timber can harbour pathogens that domestic products will not neutralise. The risk of spreading contamination to areas that appear unaffected is real.
What if sewage has gone into the carpet?
Carpet and underlay saturated with sewage almost always require removal rather than cleaning. Attempting to extract and sanitise sewage-contaminated carpet in place is not sufficient to eliminate the pathogen risk. We assess honestly on arrival.
Will my buildings insurance cover this?
In many cases, yes — particularly where the cause was a sudden blockage or failure rather than long-term neglect. We document everything from arrival, in a format accepted by UK loss adjusters, and can liaise with your insurer directly if helpful.
How do I know when it’s genuinely safe again?
We carry out verification after decontamination and confirm in writing when the area meets our safe standard. We do not declare an area finished until this check is complete.
Do you handle sewage in commercial premises and restaurants?
Yes, including outside trading hours. Restaurants and food businesses have additional environmental health obligations when sewage contamination occurs, and we can provide documentation for EHO compliance records.
