Why Rodent Droppings Cannot Be Cleaned Like Ordinary Mess

Dried rodent droppings particularly from rats — can harbour leptospirosis bacteria (the cause of Weil’s disease) as well as salmonella and other pathogens. But the risk is not only from direct contact.
When dried droppings are disturbed by sweeping or ordinary vacuuming, fine particles become airborne.
Breathing these in is a route of exposure to whatever pathogens the droppings carry. Hantavirus, while rare in the UK is transmitted primarily through inhalation of contaminated dust from rodent droppings and nesting material.
